Office of the Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer

The Office of the Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer (OCNMO) is the Queensland Government's principal advisor on all matters relating to nursing and midwifery services with a particular authority and expertise in advancing, leading and advising on matters that promote a healthier Queensland.

OCNMO provides strategic advice and develops policies and initiatives which support the delivery of health priorities and achievement of government health objectives.

OCNMO also provides a high-level monitoring and response function relating to key statewide nursing and midwifery indicators. The office is also responsible for building statewide capacity and sustainability in both professions.

Our teams

Practice Innovation Program (PIP)

The Practice Innovation Program (PIP) is responsible for facilitating the development of nursing and midwifery practice models across all levels of nursing and midwifery within the domains of leadership, management, education, clinical and research in both a decision making and advisory capacity.

PIP also assists in developing and informing innovation through best-practice models of care, role innovation, and nurse-led and advanced practice models.

Professional Capability Program (PCP)

The Professional Capability Program (PCP) develops and supports the capability and capacity of the nursing and midwifery profession in Queensland in regards to regulation, legislation and professional leadership.

PCP also facilitates the availability of adequately prepared and qualified nursing and midwifery staff to support complementary practice models, standards, care plans and clinical metrics within the states clinical services.

Workforce Sustainability Program (WSP)

The Workforce Sustainability Program (WSP) facilitates the development of nursing and midwifery workforce planning, workforce attraction and development plans.

WSP is also responsible for influencing education and research aimed at achieving excellence in nursing and midwifery care delivery, and contributing to care that is aligned with nursing and midwifery priorities and strategic direction.

WSP also facilitates the availability of appropriate nursing and midwifery resources across the state through supporting the application of the Business Planning Framework and minimum nurse-to-patient ratio legislation.

Governance and Stewardship Program

The Governance and Stewardship Program supports key government strategic intents, government election commitments and Enterprise Bargaining for the nursing and midwifery professions in Queensland.

It also ensures all activities conducted by OCNMO comply with relevant state and federal policies and procedures and that these activities are directed towards achieving the government’s vision for the health of Queenslanders.
